HPTLC Association
You already know Alkemist Labs is fanatical about botanical HPTLC testing and we were even more so last month as we hosted ~20 of our fellow plant scientists at our facility for the HPTLC Association meeting along with CAMAG Scientific, Inc. The week offered excellent technical presentations by Wilmer Perera and James Kababick, hands on demonstrations, a lab tour, and even a little ping pong in the break room.
As part of the event, Gary Binas, CAMAG Western Regional Sales Representative, surprised Sidney Sudberg with a lifetime achievement award for his dedication and outstanding contributions to the field of HPTLC. It was a very special moment and made even more wonderful because all of our staff was able to witness the affirmation of Sid’s significant impacts in the establishment of HPTLC in person. Sid was presented with a certificate and a one-of-a-kind glass award in the shape of cat to match CAMAGs Visioncats software logo.
Gary’s award presentation speech was very heartfelt. After reflecting on his daughter’s education and how important he feels it is that she knows the origin and history of what she has learned he then said:
I look at myself in the mirror and ask how true is that for me? As it relates to HPTLC, I know CAMAG. I know the history of HPTLC. I understand our technology and why we want to improve it constantly. But if I’m being honest with myself I’ve always taken for granted is how we got here…the use of HPTLC for botanical ID.
It cannot be denied that Alkemist Labs has had a significant role in that and specifically Sidney Sudberg. Sidney Sudberg is responsible for a lot of the conversations about thin layer chromatography being accepted as not just some esoteric tool in organic chemistry but for its use for botanical identification.
Because this is an HPTLC workshop being held here at Alkemist, I thought this was the most appropriate time to acknowledge Sidney for his contributions. It is with great pride, as the Western Regional Sales Representative for CAMAG and on behalf of the president of CAMAG, Marcus Weiss, that I present CAMAG Scientific’s lifetime achievement award. It reads “to Sidney Sudberg for a lifetime of dedication, excellence, and outstanding contributions to the field of thin layer chromatography leaving a lasting impact and inspiring others.
Personally, I have always been treated well by everyone that I have met at Alkemist Labs and certainly Sidney’s leadership has a lot to do with that. It is my pleasure to present to you this certificate as well as this one-of-a-kind, cat glass, the symbol of CAMAG VisionCats.

Sid gave an excellent presentation on Uncertainty and Identification of Botanicals at the HPTLC association meeting, which you can watch here: https://youtu.be/
