Dr. Sidney Sudberg has been an active research chemist since his undergraduate studies as an organic chemist at Lehman College of the City College of New York and then as a graduate student in Chemistry at Stony Brook University and New York University. After graduate school, in the late 70’s, Sidney studied Classical Chinese Acupuncture in the UK where he was introduced to the National Institute of Medical Herbalists and Herbal Medicine, after which he studied Chiropractic Medicine at the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. After many years as a clinician Sidney combined his clinical knowledge and experience with his chemistry background and founded Alkemists Pharmaceuticals, now Alkemist Labs, a respected independent contract Analytical Testing and research laboratory dedicated to ensuring the quality of Natural Products/Dietary Supplements.
As the Founder, President and CSO of Alkemist Labs, Sidney has published several scientific papers on natural products and many articles explaining lab issues and best practices to educate the herbal products industry. He serves on several committees of the American Herbal Products Association, including the Analytical Laboratories and Standards committees. He is also a technical advisor for the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia and serves on various committees of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, International where he is Chair of the Committee on Statistics and a member of the Executive Committee of the Technical Division on Reference Materials (TDRM).

Élan M. Sudberg is CEO of Alkemist Labs, a passionately committed contract testing laboratory specializing in plant authentication, botanical ingredient identification and quantitative analytical services to the Food & Beverage, Nutraceutical and Cosmeceutical Industries. He holds a degree in chemistry from California State University Long Beach, and has authored numerous journal articles on phytochemistry and analytical techniques for the natural products and nutraceutical industry. He is a board member of AHPA, as well as AHPA’s Education and Research on Botanicals Foundation, and former chair of the Hemp and Medical Marijuana committee.

Holly E. Johnson Ph.D., Laboratory Director for Alkemist Labs, joined the company in 2014 as Senior Analytical Chemist, leading project teams in analytical testing and R&D as well as performing specialized research.
Dr. Johnson earned her Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy at the College of Pharmacy, University of Illinois – Chicago, under renowned Pharmacognosist and researcher Dr. Norman Farnsworth. Holly was awarded a Predoctoral Fellowship and trained in the National Institutes for Health (NIH) Center for Botanical Dietary Supplements. Additional education includes a B.S. in Environmental Biology, and a B.S. in Botany, Department of Biological Sciences, Humboldt State University, Arcata, CA. She also worked for Waters Corporation conducting technical training and consulting for pharmaceutical and supplements companies. Holly is currently a Research Associate with the National Tropical Botanical Garden and a member of the American Botanical Council’s Advisory Board. Her research appears in peer reviewed publications such as Journal of Natural Products & Phytochemistry. Holly has 18 years experience in natural products chemistry with botanicals and spent many happy years conducting research on medicinal plants and giving courses at the University of Hawaii.
Holly Johnson Ph.D.
Petra Erlandson, Director of Sales and Marketing, joined the Alkemist staff in April 2015. She manages the sales and client service operations, works closely with the marketing and PR firm, and oversees production of all product catalogs including Alkemist Composite Reference Botanicals (CRBs), AHP Botanical Reference Materials, and Extrasynthese phytochemical reference standards. Her previous experience includes eight years in various roles at ChromaDex, including Product Line Manager and Marketing Manager.
Petra holds a Bachelor’s of Science, Chemistry from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, and has done post-graduate coursework in marketing, sales business management and quality & regulatory certifications.
Director of Sales and Marketing
Bryan Fine, Business Development Manager, began his career at Alkemist Labs in 2007 as an HPTLC Specialist and spent two years as QA/QC Manager before assuming his current role in 2008. His research experience includes a year as Research Team Leader with the California Department of Veterans Affairs and Computational Biology Research Associate at UC Merced. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Immunology from University of California, Merced.
Business Development Manager
Kory Seitz, Senior Account Manager, joined Alkemist Labs in 2011, bringing 18 years of experience in the Dietary Supplement industry. He previously held positions such as QA Manager with Hero Nutritional Products, various roles including QA/QC Manager and Production Manager with Pro-X Nutraceuticals, and six years as Manager at ChromaDex.
Senior Account Manager
Rachel Erskine, Account Manager, joined Alkemist Labs in 2012. Along with her current position, she has filled the role of Laboratory Administrative Assistant and Global Sales Coordinator. Her experience in internal Alkemist systems give her a helpful background to fill her new position of Account Manager in early 2016. She is currently completing her studies at California State University, Fullerton.
